A Historic Mission Ushers in a New Era of Miniaturized Space Exploration

## Tiny Robots Make Giant Leaps on the Moon

A pair of tiny robots, LEV-1 and LEV-2, have made history by successfully landing on the moon and completing a series of groundbreaking tasks. This mission marks a significant milestone in miniaturized space exploration technology.

LEV-2, a compact robot measuring only 8 centimeters in diameter, captured the historic landing of Japan's Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) probe. This image confirmed that SLIM had successfully touched down on the lunar surface on January 20th, albeit in an upside-down position.

LEV-1, a larger robot weighing 2 kilograms, achieved another first by becoming the first robot to hop across the surface of a celestial body. Equipped with a spring system, LEV-1 completed six successful leaps, demonstrating a novel method for traversing challenging lunar terrain.

This mission also witnessed the first instance of two fully autonomous robots collaborating on the moon without any assistance from Earth. LEV-1 served as a communication relay, transmitting images captured by LEV-2 back to Earth, despite some data loss due to communication issues.

LEV-2's success as the smallest and lightest machine to operate on the moon highlights the potential of miniaturized technology in space exploration. Additionally, the collaboration between LEV-1 and LEV-2 paves the way for future autonomous robotic missions.

Both robots have now exhausted their batteries, but the valuable data they collected is currently being analyzed. This information will be crucial for developing future space exploration initiatives.

The success of these tiny robots is a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of the engineers behind them. Professor Kimitaka Watanabe, the developer of LEV-2, drew inspiration from the movement of sea turtles to overcome the challenges of lunar terrain.
