Japan, US, Philippines to Strengthen Supply Chain Cooperation for Precious Metals

Japan, the United States, and the Philippines have agreed to work together to bolster the supply chain for valuable metals like nickel, a critical component for fuel cells used in electric vehicles. Despite the Philippines being the second-largest producer of nickel globally after Indonesia, China has made significant advancements in the processing and refining of nickel in emerging markets, leading to concerns about the supply chain's security.

The upcoming Tokyo-Washington-Manila summit, the first of its kind, is anticipated to delve into both national security cooperation and economic security matters. With a focus on securing stable mineral supplies crucial for manufacturing, the joint statement following the summit is expected to stress the importance of collaboration in this area. As the automotive industry increasingly transitions towards electric vehicles, the demand for nickel is projected to rise, prompting Japan and the US to raise apprehensions about their heavy reliance on China for rare metals.

Aside from their collaboration on nickel, the three leaders will also explore joint initiatives such as the development of small nuclear reactors for the Philippines and the enhancement of communication networks and distribution infrastructure support for Manila. Furthermore, discussions are likely to include strategies for nurturing the workforce required for semiconductor manufacturing, showcasing a comprehensive approach towards economic cooperation. On the security front, Japan, the US, and the Philippines are planning joint training exercises in response to China's maritime advancements in the South China Sea, underscoring the strategic partnership among the three nations. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., since assuming office in June 2022, has been emphasizing closer relations with the United States, aligning with Biden's efforts to strengthen ties with Japan and the Philippines, echoing a trilateral summit hosted by Biden with South Korea in August 2023.
