## Accessibility App Empowers People with Disabilities to Navigate Social Spaces

A Barrier to Impromptu Outings for People with Disabilities

For many people living with disabilities, the spontaneity of an impromptu night out is often replaced by the tedious task of researching whether a venue or activity is accessible. This constant need for information can be a significant barrier to social inclusion and participation.

Shane Hryhorec, an active member of his community, shared his frustration with the lack of accessible venues. He even created his own inclusive space, only to be forced to close it due to rising costs. This closure further reduces the already limited options for people with disabilities seeking accessible entertainment.

Lily Durkin, who lives with short stature, echoed these concerns. Simple tasks like paying a bill at a restaurant can become stressful experiences due to inaccessible counters or lack of awareness from staff. She emphasized the need for businesses to implement simple changes, such as using portable EFTPOS machines, to improve inclusivity.

Bridging the Information Gap

To address the lack of readily available accessibility information, the Pavely app was developed. This app, co-created by Kate Meade, allows users to rate and review businesses based on their accessibility features, including ramps, hearing loops, and assistance animal policies. It also provides a comprehensive database of accessible toilets across Australia.

Human Services Minister Nat Cook highlighted the app's potential to make South Australia "the most accessible state in the country." However, Lily Durkin believes there's still a long way to go. She advocates for businesses to proactively display accessibility information on their websites and social media, making it easier for people with disabilities to make informed decisions.

## A Call for Transparency and Inclusion

Ultimately, the onus lies on businesses to be transparent about their accessibility features and actively work towards creating inclusive spaces. By providing clear information and implementing simple changes, businesses can play a crucial role in removing barriers and fostering a more inclusive society for everyone.
