Nippon Steel President Defends U.S. Steel Takeover Bid

Nippon Steel Corp.'s new president, Tadashi Imai, has defended his company's proposed takeover of U.S. Steel Corp., despite opposition from the United Steelworkers Union and U.S. President Joe Biden.

In an interview with The Asahi Shimbun and other media, Imai argued that Nippon Steel is the best company to help U.S. Steel grow in the United States. He pointed to Nippon Steel's history of successfully rebuilding bankrupt U.S. companies and its deep roots in American society as a steelmaker.

Imai acknowledged the concerns of the USW and the U.S. government, but he said Nippon Steel will proceed with the takeover bid while seeking their understanding. He emphasized that Nippon Steel already employs nearly 4,000 people in the United States and has a strong commitment to the country.

The proposed takeover has faced significant opposition from the USW, which fears job losses and threats to national security. Both Biden and former President Donald Trump have also expressed concerns about the deal.

The USW has a strong presence in key swing states, including Pennsylvania, where U.S. Steel is headquartered. The outcome of the 2024 presidential election could hinge on the votes of these states, making it difficult for either Biden or Trump to ignore the USW's opposition.
