MEPs Raise Alarm Over Potential Russian Interference in Bulgarian Elections

MEPs Concerned About Russian Interference in Upcoming Bulgarian Elections

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have expressed concern about potential Russian interference in the upcoming Bulgarian national elections scheduled for June 9, 2024. This concern stems from credible reports of increased Russian attempts to influence the electoral process.

The MEPs are particularly worried about the existence and Russian control of a network of disinformation agents operating across various platforms, including social media, traditional media, academia, NGOs, and political parties. They believe this network could be used to spread misinformation and manipulate public opinion in favor of Russia's interests.

Furthermore, the MEPs are concerned about the numerous properties on Bulgarian territory currently owned by Russian authorities, some of which hold strategic importance. These properties are seen as potential centers of Russian influence and leverage over the democratic processes in Bulgaria.

A draft resolution addressing these concerns has been prepared by the European People's Party (EPP) and is scheduled for a vote in the plenary session in Strasbourg on April 25, 2024. The resolution calls for measures to counter Russian interference and protect the integrity of the Bulgarian elections.
