Two Workers Critically Injured in Mount Isa Mines Smelter Incident

Two contract workers are in critical condition after suffering severe burns at the Mount Isa Mines copper smelter in outback Queensland. The incident occurred when a steam vent opened near where the men were working.

The 26-year-old worker sustained burns to 60% of his body from the neck down. He is currently in an induced coma and on assisted breathing. The other worker, aged 25, suffered burns to 50% of his face and neck.

Both men were airlifted to Brisbane overnight for specialized treatment. The smelter operations have been suspended while an investigation is underway by Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ).

RSHQ inspectors have secured the scene and are conducting a thorough investigation. The serious incident investigation unit is also involved in the probe.

Queensland Minister for Resources and Critical Minerals, Scott Stewart, expressed his concern and offered support to the injured workers and their families. He emphasized the importance of ensuring worker safety in the industry and called for a full and thorough investigation into the incident.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service played a crucial role in transporting the injured workers to the burns unit at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. Their swift action ensured timely access to specialized care.

This incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with working in industrial environments. It highlights the need for stringent safety protocols and thorough investigations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
