Kishida Urges Global Commitment, Highlights US-Japan Partnership in Asia-Pacific

Japan's PM Addresses US Congress, Urging Global Commitment

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida addressed US lawmakers on April 11, 2024, urging them to consider global commitments amidst rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific.

Kishida highlighted the value of US commitment to global security and reassured lawmakers of Japan's strong partnership. He acknowledged skepticism about US involvement abroad, particularly among Republicans.

He reminded Congress of the US's leading role since World War II, highlighting the transformation of Japan from wartime enemy to close ally. He emphasized the US's "noble sacrifices" in fulfilling its commitment to a better world.

Japan has actively supported Ukraine and humanitarian efforts in Gaza. It also plays a key role as a US partner in the Indo-Pacific region, where China is asserting its strength and North Korea continues to develop its nuclear program.

Senate leaders stressed the importance of passing the national security supplemental package to provide defense funding for Ukraine and the Indo-Pacific.

Kishida reiterated Japan's commitment to global security and human rights, highlighting its transformation from a reticent ally to a strong partner standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the US. He emphasized China's stance as "the greatest strategic challenge" to global peace and stability.

Kishida also attended a US-Japan-Philippines summit to bolster regional cooperation in the face of China's aggression. The United Kingdom announced joint military exercises with Japan and the US in the Indo-Pacific next year.

China expressed strong opposition to these actions, accusing the US and Japan of attacking and smearing China on the Taiwan question and maritime issues.

Kishida emphasized Japan's commitment to providing Ukraine with $12 billion in wartime aid, including anti-drone detection systems. He stated, "Ukraine of today may be East Asia of tomorrow," and reaffirmed Japan's unwavering support for Ukraine.

His statements received standing ovations from much of the chamber, but some hardline conservatives remained seated. Others skipped the speech, and Capitol staff filled empty chairs with congressional aides.

These reactions reflect the pressure House Speaker Mike Johnson faces in navigating the deep divides among Republicans regarding the foreign security package.

Kishida's address highlighted the importance of global commitment and the strong partnership between the US and Japan. His visit also underscored the challenges of navigating the complex geopolitical landscape in the Asia-Pacific region.
