Automatic Emergency Braking Systems to be Mandatory in New Cars by 2029

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a new rule requiring automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems in almost all new cars and trucks sold in the U.S. by September 2029. This decision aims to improve road safety and reduce traffic fatalities, which have been on the rise since the COVID-19 lockdowns.

The NHTSA estimates that the new rule will save at least 360 lives and prevent a minimum of 24,000 injuries annually. This follows a directive from Congress in the 2021 infrastructure law, which mandated the agency to establish minimum performance standards for AEB systems.

These systems utilize sensors like cameras and radar to detect imminent collisions and automatically apply the brakes if the driver fails to react. The rule requires manufacturers to ensure these systems can detect pedestrians in both daylight and nighttime conditions.

The implementation of AEB systems has been met with mixed reactions. While some incidents involving unintended activation have raised concerns, the potential for saving lives and preventing injuries is significant. The NHTSA's decision is a step towards enhancing road safety and reducing traffic fatalities in the U.S.
