Death toll rises to 94 after migrant boat sinks off Syrian coast

On Sept 24, 2022, Mourners march with the body of one of the victims who drowned in the shipwreck of a migrant boat that sank off the Syrian coast, during his funeral after the return of his body in the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp, on the outskirts of the Lebanese northern city of Tripoli. FATHI AL-MASRI AFP CAIRO -- The death toll from a migrant boat that sank off the Syrian coast after sailing from Lebanon earlier this week has risen to 94, after more bodies were recovered from Syria's Baniyas coast on the Mediterranean Sea, Syrian state TV said on Saturday.

It is the deadliest voyage from Lebanon, where mounting economic desperation has led many to board often rickety and overcrowded boats in hopes of reaching Europe.

On Thursday afternoon, Syrian authorities found bodies off the coast of the northern port city of Tartus. The Syrian transport ministry quoted survivors as saying the boat had left Lebanon's northern Minyeh region on Tuesday with between 120 and 150 people on board, bound for Europe.
