Volkswagen recalls 1,200 vehicles over defective airbag

Volkswagen Group of America is recalling approximately 1,200 of its 2016 model-year vehicles because of concerns about a defective airbag part that could cause the airbag housing to explode.

A recall notice dated July 27 said that a defective airbag inflator could send sharp metal fragments into people inside the vehicle, resulting in serious injury or death. The recall states that an airbag that does not deploy properly increases the risk of injury in a crash.

The recall says dealers have been told to replace the airbag free of charge.

A 3 Cabriolet, A 3 Golf Golf R, Golf GTI, Golf Mk 7, and the battery-electric e-Golf hatchback are among the models affected by the 2016 Audi TT Roadster, Audi TT Coupe, S 3 Sedan, R 8 Coupe, A 3 Sedan, A 3 Sportback e-tron, 2016 Golf SportWagen, Golf R, Golf GTI, Golf Mk 7, and the battery-electric e-Golf hatchback.

A recall for exploding airbags comes after a recall in May affecting some Hyundai vehicles equipped with a defective, exploding seat belt part. The airbag inflator and seat belt pretensioner had been classified as containing similar hazardous materials.

The latest airbag campaign is not related to the long-running Takata airbag recall that has affected more than 3 million vehicles.
