Shevah Weiss, a former Israeli ambassador to Poland and former Speaker of the Knesset, died on Friday at the age of 87, Israeli media reported on Saturday.

Israel's Haaretz reported on Sunday that Weiss's funeral was scheduled to take place in Jerusalem.

Weiss was born in 1935 in the town of Boryslaw, which then was in eastern Poland and is now in Ukraine. Weiss was sheltered with a Ukrainian family and later a Polish one during the war.

He served as Knesset speaker between 1992 and 1996 and was Israeli ambassador to Poland in 2001 -- 2003, where he received numerous distinctions and was a leading contributor to Polish-Israeli relations, Haaretz wrote.

Andrzej Duda, Poland's president, offered his condolences on Saturday on Twitter.
