Japan to participate in NATO Security Council

Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi will be in the council of foreign ministers of NATO in Brussels on April 4 -- 5, according to government sources.

With the Hiroshima G 7 summit approaching in May, Japan aims to bolster cooperation with NATO on maters such as providing support to Ukraine and addressing China's actions.

The Council's agenda is expected to include discussions on Russia's continued aggression in Ukraine, China's increasing hegemonic activities in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as a potential crisis involving Taiwan.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Tuesday that Japan would contribute $30 million of equipment through a NATO trust fund after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.

Japan is committed to supporting Ukraine on the global stage as the current Chair of the G7, and wants to strengthen its relationship with NATO.
