Stock futures pause as traders await Fed meeting

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on May 30, 2023, in New York City, during morning trading.

In overnight trading, stock futures were little changed as Wall Street looked ahead to Wednesday's producer price index.

Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average were flat, along with those tied to the S&P 500. Nasdaq-100 futures rose 0.07% to close at 0.074 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Stocks are getting off a winning session as Treasury yields eased from their recent highs and Wall Street looked at the ripple effects of the Israel-Hamas war. The Dow rose 0.40%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.52% and the Nasdaq Composite surged 0.58%.

The bond yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell nearly 13bps to about 4.65%.

New York Life Investments' portfolio strategy director, Lauren Goodwin, said on CNBC's Tuesday.

Investors are still looking at the ongoing war in the Middle East after the militant group, Hamas, launched an attack on Israeli civilians in what was the deadliest attack in the country's history. President Joe Biden said yesterday that the attacks in Hamas were terrorism and that the United States stands with Israel.

The producer price index report from Wall Street will provide another clue about inflation Wednesday. Economists expect the PPI to expand by 0.3% this month, up from a year earlier, according to the Dow Jones. The Fed's latest meeting on Wednesday will provide further insights into the central bank's hiking cycle, following its decision to skip an interest rate hike last month.

Investors also look forward to Thursday's Consumer price index report for September.
