## Nippon Steel President Defends Takeover Bid of U.S. Steel

Nippon Steel Corp.'s new president, Tadashi Imai, believes his company's proposed takeover of U.S. Steel Corp. would be the most beneficial deal for American workers, despite opposition from their union and President Joe Biden.

"I am convinced that Nippon Steel is the company that can assist U.S. Steel the most in terms of growing in the United States," Imai said in an interview with The Asahi Shimbun and other media. He assumed the president's post on April 1.

Imai emphasized that Nippon Steel will proceed with the takeover bid while seeking understanding from U.S. officials and workers. He highlighted the company's long history in the United States, employing nearly 4,000 people in its subsidiaries and successfully rebuilding bankrupt American companies.

U.S. Steel, an iconic manufacturer with over 120 years of history, has faced challenges in recent decades due to intense competition from foreign rivals. Nippon Steel, Japan's largest steel producer, announced its plan to acquire the U.S. company for $14.1 billion in December.

However, the powerful United Steelworkers Union immediately voiced its opposition, citing potential harm to U.S. workers and possible national security threats. Both President Biden and former President Trump, the expected Republican challenger in the November election, also oppose the deal.

The concerns stem from the crucial role of USW members in swing states like Pennsylvania, where U.S. Steel's headquarters is located. A slight difference in votes in these states could significantly impact the election outcome, making it difficult for either candidate to ignore the union's objections.
