Retaliation, International Response, and Concerns of Escalation

A Delicate Situation

The Israeli government is currently evaluating its response to Iran's recent attack, which occurred early Sunday morning. While Israel is considering various options, the United States has made it clear that it will not participate in any retaliatory actions.

Benny Gantz, a centralist Israeli minister, stated that Israel will exact its revenge "when the time is right," according to a BBC report. The five-member Israeli war cabinet, including Gantz, convened on Sunday to discuss potential responses, but no decision was reached.

Meanwhile, the United States is emphasizing its desire to avoid escalation. President Joe Biden has informed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the US will not participate in a counter-offensive against Iran.

if Iran or its proxies take actions against the United States or further action against Israel, Iran will be held responsible," he said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed the Security Council meeting, urging all parties to de-escalate and defuse the situation. India has also called for de-escalation and urged both Iran and Israel to engage in dialogue. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke to his Iranian and Israeli counterparts, urging them to de-escalate the conflict. India has also stated that it will remain engaged in the situation.

The attack by Iran on Israel was reportedly in response to a suspected Israeli attack on its embassy compound in Syria's Damascus on April 1, which killed top Revolutionary Guards commanders. Over 300 missiles and drones were shot down by Israel's Iron Dome defense system, with assistance from the US, Britain, France, and Jordan.
