Kishida Seeks Stronger Military Cooperation with US and Philippines

Prime Minister Kishida, ahead of his US visit, emphasized the importance of strengthening military and weapons development cooperation with the US and other countries like the Philippines. He aims to enhance deterrence and response capabilities within the Japan-US alliance.

Kishida's visit, the first state visit by a Japanese leader to Washington since 2015, comes amidst Japan's expanding national security strategy. The country has taken steps to accelerate its military buildup, including doubling defense spending and relaxing weapons export guidelines.

Kishida and Biden are expected to discuss establishing a unified command, weapons co-development, and space cooperation. They will also address China's role in the region during a trilateral summit with Philippine President Marcos Jr.

Kishida will also highlight Japan's economic contributions in the US, aiming to gain public understanding regardless of the upcoming presidential election.
