Non-Communicable Diseases Threaten the Nation's Future

## India's Growing Burden of Non-Communicable Diseases

India is facing a significant challenge with the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), according to a report by Apollo Hospitals. These diseases, which include cancer, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health issues, are responsible for a staggering 63% of all deaths in the country.

Early Onset of Cancer: The average age for cancer diagnosis in India is significantly lower than in other countries. For instance, breast cancer is diagnosed at 52 years in India compared to 63 in the US and Europe.

Despite the increasing burden of cancer, screening rates in India remain alarmingly low. Only 1.9% of women undergo breast cancer screening compared to 82% in the US.

One in ten individuals surveyed reported experiencing depression, with the highest prevalence among young adults aged 18-25.

Three out of four individuals undergoing health checks were either obese or overweight, with obesity rates increasing from 9% in 2016 to 20% in 2023.

These trends have significant implications for India's future. By 2030, NCDs are projected to cost the country $3.55 trillion in lost economic output. Addressing these challenges requires a multi-pronged approach, including promoting healthy lifestyles, improving access to preventive care, and investing in research and development.
